2016 MBC Drama Awards Recap and Translations

It’s been a hell of a while since I last posted here what with university and life managing to drag me out of blogging (but not out of drama watching!). Today seemed like a good day to get back into things with the 2016 MBC Drama Awards. Everyone usually walks away with an award here, and my ultimate favourite, Ji Sung (who’s making a drama comeback soon!) walked away with quite a few last year. Let’s see what this year had to bring!

[Note: MBC has seperate categories for mini-series and daily dramas. I will be translating the speeches and wins of the more prominent award winners. I’ll be skipping PD and writer names if I can’t catch them at times. I’ll also be skipping those in the daily drama category and focusing purely on mini-series and weekend dramas. Winners are bolded among the nominees. ]

The MCs for the night were Kim Gukjin and UEE, who looked lovely although far too skeletal. The nominees for the Daesang were:

Kim Soyeon for Happy Home
Seo Inguk for Shopping King Louis
UEE for Marriage Contract
Lee Seojin for Marriage Contract
Lee Jongseok for W: Two Worlds
Jin Seyeon for Flower In Prison
Han Hyojoo for W: Two Worlds

I Remember You Series Review Part 4: The Future (Fanfiction)

Her hair’s the same length, I notice, as they draw closer, wearing matching expressions of shy delight. Her eyes crinkle as she laughs at something Hyun says, squeezing the hand wrapped around hers. As expected, she wears happiness well. It’s strange, seeing a matching expression on my brother. Standing in front of the police station, I watch them approach. Looking at them, you wouldn’t believe that a year’s passed since they last saw each other. Were it me, I’d have written him off as someone who’d abandoned me. But she knows better. I know better…now

I remain still as people walk by, resolute in stance and decision. The bustling crowd feels both strange and familiar. It’s been a year since I’ve stood alone. He was there every step in the months between. Sometimes we’d talk, sometimes we’d just walk, without awkwardness, without fear of hurting each other by anything we said. He doesn’t hide from my past but faces it as though he was in my slightly larger shoes. It may have been something he picked up from her. Frankness…that’s a good trait. I nod as the distance between us narrows. 3 yards, 2…

My brother’s in good hands.

I Remember You Series Review Part 3: Bromance, Romance and a future that could have been

Well that’s a ponderous title, innit?

But it’s the latter part that’s going to elevate this post beyond squeefest. Because that’s what 90% of this will be. I love, love, love, love, love, love Jian and Hyun as people and as a couple. I love every bit of their dynamic. Take note, drama couples. Hyun and Jian begin their relationship in (in my humble inexperienced opinion) the best way possible. They’re don’t tread lightly around each other. He blatantly calls her an annoying stalker and she blatantly calls him a too-intelligent jackass. But when he’s accused of murder, the first person he goes to is her. Well…sorta…he did break into her home and stuff. Not that I would complain if i came home to him in front of my tv.

I Remember You Series Review Part 2: On Psychopaths (and three cheers for Min!)

IRY03

Well, hello there.

Because Park Bogum is adorable.

I could talk forever on the myriad of other characters that populate this dramaverse and how much I love them and how I’d take Chief Kang Eunhyuk as well if it weren’t for the fact that my Min would disapprove hugely but the need to analyze this drama calls. So here goes!

I find summing up and analyzing key ideas in dramas quite difficult. This could perhaps be due to a problem on my part with brevity or the fact that the show I like tend to be of the sort where a few words simply don’t do them and the ideas presented within justice. But damn if I won’t try.

I Remember You Series Review Part 1: The Scooby Gang (and someone please hug Eunhyuk)

I honestly mean to expand on my previous “letter” to I Remember You earlier but that went out like most things do with my mind. Perhaps it’s fitting that I’m reviewing this at the end because this is a show where the final doesn’t merely tell you how our story ends, but why it began.

The King’s Face Ep 1 Review (and where is Shin Sung Rok?)

With breathtaking visuals and a dramatic, resonant score, the King’s Face appears to be a winner alright. That is, if you exclude the first five minutes. No seriously, anyone considering watching this drama should seriously keep the first five minutes. Why on earth the producers though that beginning with a spoiler was a good idea is beyond me. Suffice it to say that you’ll actually find the drama more enjoyable if you skip ahead, so I’ll start from what should have been the beginning had some scriptwriter not gotten overly ambitious. (And speaking of overly ambitious there’s a Pirates of the Caribbean rip-off soundtrack at 33:30 into the drama, it’s honestly such a blatant rip, it’s pretty hard to un-hear. Come on! Surely you guys can do better than that!)vlcsnap-2014-12-03-15h54m40s42 vlcsnap-2014-12-03-15h54m20s101 vlcsnap-2014-12-03-15h54m46s106 vlcsnap-2014-12-03-15h54m02s177 vlcsnap-2014-12-03-15h55m00s249 vlcsnap-2014-12-03-15h55m06s47 vlcsnap-2014-12-03-15h55m12s106 vlcsnap-2014-12-03-15h55m25s240

We begin with young Prince Sejong being told that his is a face that bodes unrest for the kingdom, should he ascend the throne. vlcsnap-2014-12-03-15h59m54s108vlcsnap-2014-12-03-16h01m04s51 The prince is not too happy to hear it and we see a cruel smirk cross his face as he stares at the face reader…who pulls a sword on him? Okay that was fast. The scene abruptly changes as present-day Sejong wakes up from his dream/flashback/whatever it was with a start. He is brought to one of the many (we are told) areas of suffering within Joseon. People aren’t too happy with the king and have no issue with showing it as they consider themselves as good as dead anyway. Sejong puts on a warmhearted face and make promises of opening the granaries and the royal cellars, but arranges for those who insulted him to be killed once out of earshot.
