2016 SBS Drama Awards Recap and Translation

Onto the final two drama ceremonies of the year! The red carpet MCs were Boom and Jung Chaeyon of IOI fame, while the MCs on stage were Lee Hwi Jae, Minah from Girls’ Day, and Jang Geunsuk.

[Note: I will be focusing on translating the interviews and speeches for Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim for the most part, because I adore that show and I’m out of time at the moment. UPDATE: Yoo Yeonsuk and Seo Hyunjin’s table interview has been translated. I’ve also covered Moon Lovers and some Jealousy Incarnate interviews. If there’s someone whose speech you want me to translate, shoot me a comment below! Also I can’t catch the name of every staff/PD/person they thank so I’ll just list them by their titles 🙂 ]
Sadly, there wasn’t much of a focus on red carpet interviews. Some stars merely said a few sentences. Park Sungwoong hoped Jo Jungseok would sin the Daesang. Namgoong Min gave a shout out to his Beautiful Gongshim co-star (and MC of the night) Minah saying that he’ll be looking forward to their MCing. Seohyun and Jun Hyosung danced about on the red carpet. Yoo Seungho gave a smolder on the red carpet and Lee Minho shot finger hearts everywhere.

Liar Game Ep 12: Just the beginning

What a ride. What a magnificent ride. Just when I thought it impossible, Liar Game has outdone itself once more. I’m going to miss this show like crazy…during the interim months until the second season that is! (And yes, I think we can definitely say that there is going to be one).

Get ready for a super long analysis. There was so much sheer perfection in this episode, I’m surprised I managed to get anything written at at all! It wasn’t entirely about our three leads this season finale, as the bonds that sprung up during the course of the show proved sturdy. Our secondary characters rose magnificently to the occasion, proving NDJ’s philosophy with gusto. Jamie remains a scene-stealer, and I hope to see more of her next season as well!

(Did someone just mention me?)

We start off with NDJ being cornered in the bathroom by Director Jang, who spews his nonsense about KDY and HWJ working together. Seriously dude, do ratings and company capital matter so much to you that you’re willing to stoop this low? And I take back everything I ever said about NDJ’s sudden distrust of HWJ. Man, this show has a way with editing previews that puts me on edge. Continue reading “Liar Game Ep 12: Just the beginning”

Liar Game Episode 11: A matter of trust

This show is honestly going to be the death of me. Even as I (mentally) jump in joy at my wild theory on DJ having been at the orphanage being right, my brain crumbled when NDJ pointed that gun at HWJ.

But let’s backtrack for an instance to the very start of this episode. We see that NDJ actually did see HWJ ready to enter the café before the news broke, which I thought would ease things a little, seeing as the man was right in front of her eyes and she could demand her answers. And she does, being the rational person she is.

Liar Game’s ep 11 preview and the return of THAT PAINTING

The preview for Liar Game’s 11th episode has been out since Friday, though I unfortunately didn’t have the ability to expunge by fears, and excitement about it. First off, THE PAINTING IS BACK!!!! Those who’ve been following the show will undoubtedly remember that moment when HWJ raced off to save his girl from KDY’s wiles (and $15000 bottles of wine) and focused on a painting in the corner for a few seconds. Well the preview shows HWJ entering a dark and musty room of sort, after which the scene cuts to a painting falling from his grasp, as he clutches his head in agony saying “This is…”.

I’ve quite a few wild theories on what it could mean and I’m just going to let them loose. This is Liar Game after all, you can’t trust anyone.

My theory is that the painting is one of the memory triggers they use in hypnosis and the like. Then, DY had a dual purpose in inviting DJ to his place: to get those pictures of her and secondly to get HWJ racing off (to protect his girl) to his place where he’d see the painting. Thus, seeing it again in episode 11 would then serve to bring back HWJ’s repressed memories.

Liar Game Ep 10: When all secrets come to light

I have no words. This episode was absolutely incredible for start to finish. Liar Game has outdone itself in term of production quality, storytelling, characterization, need I go on? Every episode is jam-packed with revelation after revelation, like peeling back the layers of an onion. And it’s so brilliant I can scarce breathe when watching it. This episode focuses particularly on the bonds between our characters, particularly how NDJ has the ability to gain trust so easily. NDJ really gets her moment to shine, time after time within this episode, treading boldly where she’d have shied before. HWJ, is surprised, proud and amused when NDJ boldly decides to take a whole $50K more, than the $5K he asked for.

(How adorable!)

While JDG’s betrayal was sudden and shocking, his motives were what one might expect, a desire to protect NDJ and fear that HWJ was using her to win the game. Yet betrayal was betrayal, as Jamie noted. But DJ and HWJ’s quiet forgiveness of DG was what got me teary-eyed. Seeing DG sobbing into HWJ’s arms, was super moving as were HWJ’s gentle words. “We’re finally one team.” (I love this man so much!)

Liar Game Episode 9: Reversals and a shocking betrayal

That. was. INCREDIBLE. I’ve watched. I’ve re-watched it. And I’m probably going to watch it again. I have yet to see Episode 10 (which will probably happen sometime today, as I’m awful at balancing university life with overly additive shows) but I honestly won’t be able to function until I do. I think I’ve calmed down enough over the past 9 and a half hours to get my thoughts down, so here goes.

Liar Game

Liar Game’s preview for Ep 9

For some reason, I cannot help dissecting each and every part of this show, which is strange as I’m normally one to leave things at that. Perhaps it’s because there’s just so much packed into each beautiful episode. I also like to think that it’s the best way to pay tribute to great storytelling: to think and talk about it. Regardless of the fact that these people are characters, I like to think of them as people. Heaven knows, I believe that’s what the writer(of the manga and the screenwriter of this drama) would have wanted and what she/he would have thought. I did think that there was a little less NDJ in the past two episodes than I’d have liked ( I do love her as well). But the coming two appear to make up for that.

Holy Cow! Episode 8 of Liar Game

First off…YES! I was right about DG’s first promise! It feels so good to work along with HWJ. Nevertheless, our hero didn’t get to save his false promise for the end thanks to KDY’s machinations. But that wasn’t all that occurred. We came around to the moment I dreaded upon seeing this episode preview.

vlcsnap-2014-11-12-15h50m49s135

This scared me. HWJ has always had his emotions under tight leash. There’s a startling similarity between him and KDY in that sense. Hence why this burst of emotion is all the more frightening. In that instant he realized he’d missed something. Infallible as he was, some part of KDY’s plan had slipped past him. That registered on some level, and frightened him. That something could lead to him losing the game, to losing the answers he’d searched so hard to find. And so he cracked for an instant, emotion leaking through. But our hero rallied soon enough, and I heaved a sign of relief. Too soon. Watching the previous episode did make me wonder if HWJ was getting perhaps a tad overconfident. He seemed to be to calm, too collected.

Thoughts on Episode 7 of Liar Game

I’ll try not to post spoilers in during my ramblings and focus more on the tiny details I noticed per episode and the questions that each invariable brings. First off, I am so in love. Ha Woo Jin continues to be the best male K-drama lead I have seen in years. I squealed so hard at that “I won’t let Da-Jung get hurt” bit and the “In want to see her dream realized” bit. Can I fall even more in love with this man?

vlcsnap-2014-11-11-21h10m32s222 vlcsnap-2014-11-11-21h10m39s30 vlcsnap-2014-11-11-21h13m27s160 vlcsnap-2014-11-11-21h17m32s46

(Rawr)

That being said things are starting to heat up. Kang Do-Young sudden (not so surprising when you think about it) entrance into the game has resulted the stakes being raised for our hero and heroine. More so,now that he actively appears to be pursuing WooJin. I’m super worried that his supposed overreaching when making this second promise (that resulted in Jamie leaving his prty) is but a ploy. Kang Do Young (henceforth KDY) is not the sort to simply make mistakes without there being an ulterior motive and I am honestly scared for Ha WooJin (henceforth HWJ) and Nam DaJung (Henceforth NDJ) as to what this may mean.
