Mystic Pop Up Bar Ep 3 Recap (and rich asshole CEOs)

Not sure whether I’ll go on to recap the whole show or alternate between recapping and reviewing, but I’ll definitely be covering this show regardless! So without further ado, I’ll jump right into the show.

Mystic Pop Up Bar (and where on earth have I been)

Ah, 2017. I remember when this little blog was growing and I had all the time in the world to do what I love: fangirling and dissecting kdramas. Then, life happened. More specifically, law school happened. Now those who frequented this site despite my 3 year hiatus might go well damn, you’re rich now. Nope. Not even close, I’m even more in student debt than I was before and this pandemic has affected what small prospects I had for a long-term career in a very saturated market. So I’m back to drown my sorrows in Kdramas! Not that I ever stopped watching dramas these past 3 years (okay, only for the first year, I didn’t have time to breathe that year), but I just didn’t have the time to lay out the analyses I was known for.

But law school (aka hell) is now over and life shows signs of resuming, so I’m finally back with a review of Netflix’s latest foray into Kdramas: Mystic Pop-up Bar.

First off, that is a terrible translation of the Korean title 쌍갑포차 (Ssang-kab-po-cha). The last two syllables 포차 (po-cha) refers to the road-side red tent restaurant seen so often in Kdramas. The first two syllables 쌍갑 (Ssang-kang) are a little more complicated. 쌍 means twins or equal and 갑 has a meaning similar to ‘top’ or boss’, hence ssang-kap-po-cha. A red tent restaurant where all customers are equal and everyone’s a boss (no class/hierarchy here!)

But that’s where all the terribleness ends, because this show is a lot of fun. And I mean FUN.  Continue reading “Mystic Pop Up Bar (and where on earth have I been)”

Marriages

The talented and beautiful Hwang Jungeum is married! (with Ji Sung and Park Seojoon in attendance)

And she’s married! Her wedding’s already a hot topic (trending #1 on Naver) because of the sheer volume of celebrities that showed up and one very conspicuous person who didn’t. Ayumi (her former Sugar bandmate who flew all the way from Japan) attended the 700 guest bash while Park Soojin (whose wedding Hwang Jungeum attended) make excuses not to go. Ah well, all’s fair in love because the bride sure is glowing.

Dating/Marriage News · Kill Me Heal Me

KMHM’s 1 year anniversary (and Hwang Jungeum’s marriage)

It’s hard not pass this day by without mentioning KMHM seeing as it was a year ago that what has now grown to be one of the most iconic lines on TV was aired (at 10pm!)
“Remember, January 7th, 10pm, the time I fell for you”
Oh Shin Segi! When will I ever get over you? Another reason this merits discussion (besides KMHM being forever close to my heart) is that the lovely Hwang Jungeum is getting married!

Awards

MBC Drama Awards 2015 (and JISUNG, Hwang Jungeum and Park Seojoon!)

Heaven know why but I”m more nervous than Jisung as to the outcome of tonight’s drama awards. Having been snubbed for the grand prize at the Baeksangs, I’m praying this’ll be the night he is properly honoured for his talents. I did download the complete ceremony but MBC’s being slow with updating the clips so some videos are missing 🙂 In the meantime I’ll post translations of all the speeches.
EDIT: JISUNG WON THE DAESANG PEOPLE!
The hosts for the night Shin Dongyup and actress Lee Sungkyung (who did an opening song and dance for the ceremony) did start off by telling winners to try and make their speeches as brief as possible due to this being a live broadcast and not wanting to run over time, which I thought was a pretty poor move to make that chances are that you’ll forget someone if you speed through things but there you go! She Was Pretty

She Was Pretty Ep 16 Review (and thank you for a fun 16 episodes!)

The recap was getting too long so I moved this over here. This won’t contain anything in the vein of my usual analysis because there really isn’t much to analyze with this show. Those expecting smarts and stunts are watching the wrong show. But at the same time there’s nothing really wrong with simplicity. It’s a breath of fresh air at times really, when you just want to relax and watch people having fun instead of getting your heart town out because of sexy men in leather and eyeliner. Though I ended up getting my heart torn out anyway because of Shinhyuk.  Continue reading “She Was Pretty Ep 16 Review (and thank you for a fun 16 episodes!)”

She Was Pretty

She Was Pretty Ep 16 Finale Recap (and weddings, smooches and truckloads of cuteness!)

SO MUCH CUTE! My cheeks ached from grinning from all the cutesieness, and I nearly got cavity from all the syrupy lines, but I’m overall satisfied with the end of She Was Pretty. Further thoughts below, but first, the recap!
[Warning: this recap will be screencap-heavy, and I’ll be updating it a bit at a time, as adding screencaps takes foreverrrrrr 😛]

We flashback to little Hyejin professing her dream of becoming a writer. We then see Hyejin resigning from working and preparing for her year long sojourn as a member of the writer’s group. In voice-over, she says this:
Hyejin: When you’re young, many people ask ‘What is your dream?’ However, as I mature, the number of people asking what my dream is gradually disappearing. Holding onto my dream until I become an adult isn’t easy in this world. When faced with reality, somewhere along the line, the fact that the dream seems way out of reach, and seems to have disappeared, causes me not to even remember what my dream was to begin with at any given moment. However, before completely forgetting my dream, thankfully, someone asked the adult version of me again. She Was Pretty

She Was Pretty Ep 15 Mini Recap (and farewell my dearest Shinhyuk)

[University’s finally caught up, so this’ll be a recap with fewer screencaps, besides Shinhyuk’s farewell. It actually takes me 1-1.5 hours to get all the screencaps in usually, and I don’t have that time today! 😦 I should be all caught up to recap next week’s finale though!]

Shinhyuk calmly introduces himself as TEN while Sungjoon reels in shock. He hands Sungjoon a recording he’s made, telling him to use it to write the main feature article. Sungjoon understands what implications this’ll have for Shinhyuk and hesitates, yet Shinhyuk reverts to his characteristic jokey behaviour and tells him to go on and do it. He says he planned to tell Hyejin first, but knowing her, she’d feel too bad to actually write anything so he’s entrusting this to Sungjoon. He did create the recording thinking he’d be speaking to Hyejin though, so he asks Sungjoon to excuse the informal language. Despite all his outward humour, that’s a vein of sadness that runs deep in his eyes. Shinhyuk leaves before Sungjoon can protest any further. Sungjoon returns him and listens to the recording his face growing more and more worried before calling the print shop editor and telling him to proceed anyway, without the main feature article. Aww, he’s protecting Shinhyuk hereContinue reading “She Was Pretty Ep 15 Mini Recap (and farewell my dearest Shinhyuk)”

She Was Pretty

She Was Pretty Ep 14 Recap (and TEN is….!)

We return to Sungjoon and Hyejin prior to them kissing where he vows that he’s more certain of this decision (to marry her) than anything his whole life. They smooch and I swoon. Meanwhile, Shinhyuk hears that the interview with Leonard Kim’s been cancelled owing to something shady the fellow has done. Ji Sungjoon sees the text messages and missed calls upon returning to the office and just about has a heart attack. But there’s nothing that can be done. She Was Pretty

She Was Pretty Ep 13 Recap (and cuddles and swoony kisses galore!)

I’m glad that this ep’s up for the somewhat mini-recap because we honestly didn’t have much happening in the way of plot (even less than usual xD) but She Was Pretty made up for that in more way than one!
So Sungjoon and Hyejin basically spend the first half hour of the episode flirting and kissing. I kid you not.
